No. 1.—A Steer.

HERE’S AN ACTIVITY the whole family can enjoy! Simply fill in the numbered areas on this drawing of a steer, using the numerical key to guide your choice of colors. When you’re done, you’ll have a beautiful painting, similar to the celebrated agricultural paintings of the Dutch artist Aelbert Cuyp, but with considerably less effort.

  1. Audrey Lochenside-Fay says:

    Dear Dr. Boli,

I thought that my son Pickles would benefit from this art project, however, he painted section 11 white. As he was walking up the stairs to his room for his “three days of punishment”, I reminded him that the colour white was considered too “happy” in the Flemish School.

  2. Robert Agamemnon-Fargy says:

Ha-ha, Audrey! My daughter Zoologia, age 6 7/8, apparently misunderstood the instructions as well, coloring the segments each a different hue in numerical order. She combined this with a darned near frightening ability to stay within the lines, the result being a poor unfortunate bovine that looks not unlike the Partridge Family bus.

  3. Lamp says:

My daughter, Lampshade misunderstood the directions. she’s 55. they were wayyy too hard for her. she thought brown meant black and white. if you could make this easier, that would be terrific!! thanks for all your hard work in making this colour by numbours.
