The Spite Garden
Do not despise me quickly or too slow:
Despise me only at a middling speed.
For spite too leisured takes too long to grow,
And spite too hasty looks too much like greed.
Take time to grow a perfect spite from seed.
Plant in light compost near the tenth of May.
Take my advice: be ruthless when you weed,
And always water early in the day.
But if you pay no heed to what I say,
Your fruits of spite will wither on the vine.
And then don’t come to me with your dismay.
I’ll say I told you so, so don’t you whine.
So if you want to cultivate your spite,
You’ll find it worth your while to do spite right.
