I am put in mind of a story about George Peppard who, in his younger days, was a dedicated follower of fashion. Then, one year, he came in to get everything altered for the coming season and made the mistake of asking his tailor, “So, what’s different this year?” and the tailor replied, “The vents are a half inch higher.” Suddenly, Peppard thought of all the time and trouble and cost he put into keeping up — versus the triviality of the change — and became a dedicated wearer of jumpsuits.
