DIRECTIVE No. 2008-56B.

BY DIRECTIVE OF the Standing Committee of the Bureau of Usage, Department of the English Tongue, the use of the word “meme” to describe any notion or catchphrase of little or no consequence spreading through the Internet is prohibited until further notice. Violations of this Directive are punishable on a sliding scale under the provisions of the Digital Annoyances Act of 2004. In place of the prohibited term, the Standing Committee recommends the use of the word “idea,” or, in more generalized usages, “thingy.”
