ON THIS DAY in 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne of England. In a radio address to his subjects, he explained, “I have found it impossible to carry on the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties, as I would wish to do, in a position in which I see no clear path for advancement.”
