    There are different ways of appreciating old typewriters. An arist friend several years ago was making pieces out of parts from old junked typewriters, which he cast into clear or translucent resins and then ground the surfaces down to reveal the metal in interesting ways.

    I hope you get up to more recent and design-y things like some Olivettis I’ve had. One was electric, with a type ball, and as heavy as a xerox machine. But very stylish.

      The only typewriter Dr. Boli has that is more recent than the Royal HH above (which he thinks of as ultra-modern) is the Olivetti Valentine, but you are welcome to look at that one until the color sears a hole in your retinas. It certainly is design-y. It also works well as a typewriter, though it is a simpleminded creature compared to, for example, the Royal Quiet Deluxe.

    I learned to type on “the hulking beast” in the mid-1980s at a public grade school. Eight of the monsters sat at the back of the 5th and 6th grade English classroom. They survived only-G-d-knows how many of us pounding upon their keys and were probably the best investment some long-gone school administrator ever made in terms of classroom equipment.
