17. Arabic Numbers. Books should be disfigured as little as possible by arabic numbers in the text. Numbers thus set are always dry and forbidding in appearance. See paragraphs 19, 24, and Words, under paragraph 27, division (16).

    In the next entry, this master of style recommends 2.30 p. m. over 2:30 P.M., as the latter is likely to engender confusion as to whether half past two o’clock in the afternoon is intended, or, perchance, a ratio of 2-to-30 postmasters. He has a point; the errant interpretation is a mistake I often make. Similarly, I gaveled in a meeting late last week because I thought the 9:15 A.M. start time indicated that we could not begin until nine of the fifteen attendees held Master of Arts degrees.
