WHY WE LOVE WIKIPEDIA.

We love Wikipedia because it displays current prejudices so efficiently that it is a nearly infallible guide to the thoughts that will be pinging around in the brains of the moderately educated. The utility of such a tool for the conscientious historian cannot be overstated. For example, from the article on Slavery in Ancient Rome:

Over time, however, slaves gained increased legal protection, including the right to file complaints against their masters. Attitudes changed in part because of the influence among the educated elite of the Stoics, whose egalitarian views of humanity extended to slaves.

Now, what obvious influence might we have missed here? Anybody? Yes, in the back row? Oh, you were just scratching yourself.
