But what can I do?

Nothing. The first step in overcoming the shame and tragedy of news addiction is to understand that nothing you do makes any difference. 
The second step is to realize that the news doesn’t make you happier.
The third step is to accept that keeping up with the news doesn’t make you a better person.
You can be a good, healthy, productive individual without devoting hours every day to worrying over current events. Develop an interest of permanent value—such as, for example, operetta. The six hours a day the average news addict devotes to her addiction could be enough for two operettas, providing gainful employment for dozens of singers and musicians.
