The French Revolution is a fact of history. We know that it happened. But it is much more difficult to understand how it happened. How could an aristocracy become so completely oblivious to the concerns of ordinary French people that the aristocrats would not see the cataclysm coming?

Perhaps it would be easier for us to understand if we could find some analogue in our own world—some class of contemporary aristocrats who blindly toddle on into the apocalypse, honestly believing that the laboring classes are completely contented with their leadership. A class like, for example, business-school graduates.
