On this day in 1861, Oba Dosunmu of Lagos was forced by the British to sign a treaty ending slavery in Nigeria. This confused the Nigerians, who thought they recalled that the British had had a rather different attitude toward slavery a while back. “But whatever,” said the Nigerians.
