    I am trying to envision the sculptor’s sense of humor when he (she?) was given the commission for a Theological Seminary and decided to create these.

      They’re in the true medieval spirit; you’ll find similarly cartoonish faces all over cathedrals in Europe, and early-twentieth-century architects and sculptors collaborated to bring that spirit back to life for a few years before modernism killed it again. Here is another example from the Pittsburgh area—a furnace vent from the Church of the Assumption in Bellevue that demonstrates the torments prepared for the damned:
