The Rev. Bob-Bob Lee made waves at a Pittsburgh Council of Churches summit when he accused the Catholic Diocese of bingolatry, which he defined as the sin against the Holy Spirit. In an impromptu sermon by the espresso machine, he called on Western Pennsylvania Catholics to abandon their pagan worship of the bingo card and return to the purity of the church of the Apostles. Bishop Zubik said that he was sure the Rev. Bob-Bob would turn out to be a very nice person if he got to know him, which he hoped would never happen.

What are us poor Catholics to do, now that tithing has been declared un-constitutional (except to the Government)?

Indulgences. Dr. Boli has mentioned it before, but it is worth pointing out again that you poor Catholics have a resource no Protestant denomination is willing to tap: the Keys of Peter. Let it be known that substantial indulgences are offered for maintaining the church, for organizing the van pool, for updating the electrical work in the rectory, for swapping out the missals in the pews every time the hymns go out of date, and the faithful will trip over each other trying to get the work done that needs doing.

I am honestly wondering now about how many parishes still hold bingo nights. Between consolidations and passing of the generation for whom that was a primary means of socializing, it can’t be as popular as it once was. The parish that I grew up in had it, but none of the ones with which I’m associated now do. I’ll have to poll some people on that.
