Yankee Doodle by Thomas Nast

Yankee Doodle.—Because the facts of the case did not fit the meter or rhyme scheme, the musical biography of Yankee Doodle leaves out the important information that, on the same occasion when he stuck a feather in his cap and called it Macaroni, he also stuck a carnation in his lapel and called it Cheese.

What’s the date of the picture in this post?  I note with interest that the little sign at bottom center specifies “New York”, and by the treaty that ended the Revolutionary War, New York City was the last place evacuated by the British.  Did this picture commemorate that departure?

  2. heloise says:

    Yankee Doodle snorted snuff
    just to raise a sneeze
put a mum in his lapel
    and called it Stilton cheese

(Reports that he used a carnation instead of a chrysanthemum are erroneous, said Mr. Doodle, adding that he would never use a three-syllable flower, that would be unmetrical.)
