    What is a “gatherererer,” we ask?

    I consulted my trusty copy of A Dictionary of the English Language: In Which The WORDS are deduced from their ORIGINALS AND ILLUSTRATED in their DIFFERENT SIGNIFICATIONS BY EXAMPLES from the beft WRITERS.

    Sadly, my copy must be out of date, or perhaps the beft writers make use of “gatherererer” only infrequently, for I cannot find the term therein.

    We are forced to deduce the WORDS from their ORIGINALS by ourselves. A “gatherer” says Johnson, is “One that gathers; one that collects; a collector.” What is it that he collects? Well, obviously a “gather” — stuff.

    So by extension, a gathererER is a collector of gatherers — a collector of collectors, like my dear friend the Marquess of Blandford, who collects philatelists and displays them neatly pressed in books. A gatherererER, therefore, must be a collector of collectors of collectors.

    How then did our noble savage earn his bread? – By gathering people who gathered other people who gathered all the food.

    From which it may be inferred that civilization was not the only ponzi scheme around during the era of the hunter-gatherererers, and that we should perhaps not judge our ancestors too harshly for having made the switch.
