As they are looking up into the sky, it must be the Akron Blimp that they see, which often cruises around the Riviera. (Or the Riviera of Lake Erie, anyway.)

  One of the current fleet of Goodyear Blimps which, ironically, are not actually blimps, but semi-rigid airships produced by the Zeppelin company.
  
  Better yet, it could be USS Akron, a nearly-800ft long rigid airship, built in its namesake city and operated by the Navy in the 1930s.
