NOTICE.

So many readers have asked for the standard array of social-media sharing buttons that Dr. Boli has finally decided to add them, in spite of his own reservations. If you have an opinion on this addition, Dr. Boli would be happy to hear it.

  1. Fred says:

I tried wearing this style of buttons myself but it clashed with my tie.

  2. Captain DaFt says:

Well, I ran across them at the bottom of THE EDITOR OF THE PATRIOT article, and thought it was some kind of gag.
Then I saw this notice and waxed apoplectic.

Then I calmed down and promptly blocked them.

Pity, this was one of the few refuges on the web from such vermin.

  3. Dan Berger says:

People need to learn to use the blasted internet. Really, y’all, is copying and pasting from your browser’s address bar really that hard?

As for me, I don’t use buttons; I use bone toggles, held on with animal sinew.

  4. Dr. Boli says:

We’ll try them for a week or so. If more people hate them than use them, we’ll get rid of them.

Dr. Boli suspects that many of the readers who use these buttons are reading on a phone or tablet, an environment in which copying and pasting from the address bar really is a challenge.

Meanwhile, we have switched to monochrome buttons, which mitigates the ugliness a bit.

  5. Thom Ryng says:

    Dear sir,

For what possible interest it may be, I approve. Thank you for your consideration.

    Yours truly,

    etc.

  6. Sigivald says:

    I feel misled, Sir!

“Print” is by no means social media, as it certainly does not require one to ever let another human being see the printed output.

    For shame.

    For shame.

  7. Tonguen Cheeque says:

    I find sharing buttons to be very unhygienic – I’ll zip-up now…

  8. Hmph, no button for Fark, the only such aggregator I actually use.

    • Dr. Boli says:

As it happens, the simple plugin that provides the buttons has no button available for Fark.

We chose this particular plugin because some similar plugins have a slightly shady reputation for tracking users who push the buttons and selling the data. This one is very simpleminded, but it did give us enough control to make the buttons small and monochrome rather than large and colorful.

Dr. Boli is still not sure about the whole idea of “sharing buttons,” but it does appear that people are using them. (Dr. Boli does not track who uses them, but he does see how many people are using them.)

  9. Maypo says:

I do not habituate the “social media” sites. I don’t know a “friend” from a “like”. However I do like my friends, even virtual pseudonymous ones. If one of said friends decides to change the appearance of his web site in a way that pleases him, who am I to judge?

  10. RepubAnon says:

If media wants to be social, it can do so without me. In my Thesaurus, the synonyms for “security breach” include Facebook, Twitter…
