MEANWHILE, OVER AT ANOTHER WEB HOST…

A warning about violating the terms of service:

“If you are going to violate our TOS, please read this text until it’s not too late!”

…after which comes a paragraph of warning about hacking, phishing, and so on. The question that arises, of course, is this: How many times will we have to read that paragraph before it’s not too late? And another question: Does this sentence mean that it was too late before we read the paragraph, but after we read the paragraph a certain number of times it will no longer be too late? There is a strong temporal distortion field emanating from somewhere in Eastern Europe.

It sounds like both a logical contradiction and an infinite loop. How can someone know whether they intend to violate the terms of service (TOS) before reading them? Having made that momentous decision, one must therefore keep re-reading the paragraph until it is too late.

I’m assuming the state of “too late” occurs when someone actually violates the TOS. However, by cleverly trapping those intending to violate the TOS into re-reading the paragraph over and over again, the violator wanna-bes would not have time to actually violate the TOS by committing one of the proscribed actions.

Thar! That oughta stop them TOS violators in thar tracks!
