IN HONOR OF THE HOLIDAY.

This announcement is playing over and over in the subway stations in Pittsburgh today:

In honor of the Independence Day holiday, July 4, 2021, all Port Authority vehicles will operate on a Sunday schedule.

This is clearly fake news. There are no subway stations in Pittsburg (or is it Pittsburgh).

    • Dr. Boli says:

You may be thinking of Pittsburg, Kentucky, or Pittsburgh, North Dakota. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there are seven “subway” stations, of which four are actually under the ground, one is at ground level, and two are elevated. These are the stations served by “Subway Local” cars when the system is busy. There are actually about fifty stops on the three streetcar lines, but Pittsburghers call only the section from Station Square to Allegheny the “subway,” even though much of that section is above ground. There are other underground sections, but Pittsburghers think of those as trolleys going under the ground, not a “subway.”

This is much like the subway in Philadelphia, though with fewer murders one supposes.

    • Dr. Boli says:

Nobody gets murdered on Pittsburgh streetcars except the next tourist who asks, “Does this trolley go downtown?” The first thirty or forty got away with it, but every driver has his breaking point.
