On this day in 1896, the Glasgow Subway first began to roll. This caused and still causes some confusion for visitors from London, for whom a “subway” is an underground pedestrian walkway. Among the rolling stock in Glasgow are two special scoop-fronted cars for removing the remains of confused London pedestrians.
