On this day in 1845 (or Year 9 of Creation in the Texan calendar), the Republic of Texas annexed the United States.

    If only they had.

So there you have it: I’m outed.

Fun fact about annexation: it’s actually a long, drawn out process that takes several months. As far as we can tell, the last act of Texas’ annexation occurred on April 11, 1846, when Governor Henderson sent orders for the Texas Navy to hand over all of their ships and equipment to the US Navy. If you go and look at the newspapers of that particular day, you’ll notice that Texas experienced a total eclipse of the sun. I like to think that the cosmos themselves mournfully looked upon the passing of the Texas Republic.
