    Dr. Boli may correct me if I’m wrong, but I think LL.D. stands for “limited liability doctor,” a legal term indicating that the holder of said title cannot be held legally or financially responsible if a patient or other customer seeks his counsel in an area outside of the subject in which he has gained his doctorate(s).

    For instance, a patient or client is perfectly free to consult, say, a person with a doctorate in paleobotany on the subject of the correct use and storage of high explosives. A paleobotanical LL.D. would prevent our hypothetical doctor from being sued and/or prosecuted for any advice he/she gave on the subject of explosives, should that advice be incorrect and result in the loss of life, limb or property of the poor schmoe who asked the question.
